James B. Appleberry’s search focus and experience for Academic Search is public colleges and universities and for-profit institutions, and he has assisted in the selection of all members of the institutional leadership team from President to Dean. In his Of Counsel role at Academic Search, he assists other Senior Consultants in all kinds of institutions including two-year, four year, and research universities. He also works in the for-profit sector, and is currently Vice-Chair of the Board of a for-profit institution.

Appleberry counsels presidents, chancellors and boards on issues of leadership and change, and he is a trusted confidant of countless university leaders. Trustees and search firms called on him frequently for information about candidates seeking new positions and for nominations for positions. He has published numerous articles on leadership and change in higher education.

Dr. Appleberry has been instrumental in helping U. S. based universities establish linkages with universities in over 20 countries throughout the world. He completed his doctorate at Oklahoma State University, and holds distinguished alumni awards from Central Missouri State and Oklahoma State, and nearly a dozen honorary doctorates. His biography appears in Who’s Who in the World, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Two Thousand Notable Americans.

He is president-emeritus of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and of Northern Michigan University. Prior to his presidency at NMU, he served for nearly seven years as president of Pittsburg State University in Kansas.
