Dr. Herman E. Collier, Jr., of counsel, joined Academic Search in 1998. The centerpiece of his academic experience is the 25 years he served Moravian College and Theological Seminary, 17 as President. Upon his retirement he was named President Emeritus. Prior to joining Academic Search he served as interim President of four independent institutions – Salem Academy and College, North Carolina Wesleyan College, Chowan University and Lees McRae College. He has held state and national leadership positions, including the Pennsylvania Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Foundation for Independent Colleges, was a member of the task force responsible for the Higher Education plan of Pennsylvania and was one of the founders of the Lehigh Valley Consortium of Independent Colleges.

Conducting two to three searches each year, Dr. Collier has completed 20 searches across a range of independent institutions, many in the South and several of them church-related. Among the thirteen collegiate institutions he has served are Wabash College, Kalamazoo College, and Sarah Lawrence College. In addition he has assisted with searches for several theological seminaries and Eastern Virginia Medical School.

His earned degrees in Chemistry are from Randolph-Macon College and Lehigh University. He has been the recipient of several honorary degrees. Prior to his higher education career, he was a research chemist in the Organic Chemicals Department of E. I. duPont de Nemours Company and was awarded several patents.

Dr. Collier’s extensive community role includes many board memberships (several stints as chair) in the areas of health care, historic restoration, charitable foundations, scouting, the United Way, and regional economic development. While serving as a member of the Science Advisory Board of the Environmental Protection Agency, he chaired a nationally select committee of scientists charged with the review and evaluation of the specifications for the storage and disposal of high level nuclear waste.

He and his wife have three sons and nine grandchildren and reside in Southern Pines, NC.
